Are Shatter Resistant Window Films Worth It? What BC Owners Need to Know

This guide covers window tinting for homes and buildings. Ecovision does not tint vehicles, for architectural glass only.

Direct Answer: Yes. Shatter-resistant window films are worth it on BC doors, storefronts, and lobby glass when the goal is fragment hold after impact, not bulletproof glass. Ecovision Window Films installs LLumar SCL SR PS grades (typically 4 to 13 mil) across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland at $16 – $22 per square foot installed. Cure time is always 30 to 60 days.

They are worth specifying when a smash would otherwise dump shards into a lobby, classroom, or retail floor. The polyester laminate does not stop the first hit from cracking the lite. It holds fragments so the opening is not immediately walk-through. That delay is the value for ground-floor glass in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey. Thin 2 mil solar film is not a substitute.

Ecovision quotes LLumar SCL SR PS4, PS7, PS8, and PS13, plus Vista architectural safety grades when the project names Vista. PS7 (about 7 mil) is a common lobby and door spec. PS13 is used where more tear resistance is required. Care homes such as Rosemary Heights Seniors Village and Windermere Care Centre use the same fragment-hold logic on interior glass. Commercial towers such as Bentall 4 survey lobby doors separately from solar film on the curtain wall.

What Does Shatter-Resistant Film Actually Do?

It is a clear polyester security overlay bonded to the interior lite. On impact the glass still breaks. The adhesive keeps pieces attached so occupants are less likely to be cut and forced-entry delay increases. Tests commonly referenced on specified glass include ANSI Z97.1, AS/NZS 2208, and UL 972 for thicker burglary-resisting laminates. It is not ballistic glazing.

Film typeTypical useInstalled price (CAD / sq ft)
Clear safety 4 to 8 mil (PS4 / PS7 / PS8)Doors, lobbies, classrooms$16 – $20
Clear security 13 mil class (PS13)Storefronts, higher delay$18 – $22
Residential solar (VS60 / VS70)Heat and UV, not security$10 – $18
Commercial solarOffices and retail IGUs$9 – $18

Security work sits at $16 – $22. Solar heat film is a different product. See the full window film cost in BC guide. Frame attachment (wet glaze vs mechanical) and after-hours access drive labour more than mil thickness alone.

When Is Shatter-Resistant Film Not Worth It?

Skip it when the glass is already fogged, the IGU spacer has failed, or the owner only wants heat control. Specify LLumar VS60 (~59% VLT, ~50% TSER on 6 mm dual clear) or VS70 (~62% VLT, ~49% TSER) for solar. Do not treat 4 mil safety film as a smash-and-grab delay product. Do not film a lite that WorkSafeBC egress hardware cannot still operate after a break.

Interior wet-lamination: clean, cut, squeegee, edge finish. Occupants can use the space the same day. Optical clear-down takes 30 to 60 days. Door glass is measured separately from sidelites. Rocky Mountaineer facilities and government door packages follow the same survey: glass thickness, tempered vs annealed, and whether a door closer will stress a newly filmed lite. For storefront packages see security window film and UV blocking when solar is stacked on the same elevation.
